He was one of 420 participants in the relay in the city, running a distance of 200 m along Diakonova Street, in his native Avtozavodsky district.
“The Olympic Torch Relay is very important, both for our city and for the whole country. However what is even more important is that it has put fire in our blood, and reminded us to aim to understanding the significance of this kind of event. I personally think that it was very symbolic. Wasn’t it just amazing that it fell to me to carry this symbol of patriotism through the Avtozavodsky district, where I was born and grew up? I could see my classmates, teachers and neighbours amongst the people welcoming the torch. It is symbolic that the presence of the Olympic Torch in Nizhny Novgorod also coincided with the great festival of Christmas” said Vasily Sitdikov, as he shared his impressions of the relay.
“One hundred years ago a certain monk said that we should care for the health of our souls as if we only had one day to live, and care for the health of our bodies as if it we needed them to last another hundred years. We should remember this: our sporting achievements are important, not ‘for themselves’ but only if they develop our best moral qualities: courage, spirit, honesty, reliability and charity”, said Vasily Sitdikov. “Certainly, the relay shows our progress. It provides the impetus for thinking of what else should be done and how we should ‘complete our distance’ in passing our torch to future generations.”
